Over 70 frontline aid workers have departed for Addis Ababa in Ethiopia from the OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng today where they are expected to disperse into different countries to provide aid and assistance. With a halt in operations due to COVID-19 restrictions, the United Nations in South Africa requested a temporary hub through which cargo and frontline workers would move in Africa. Since May 1st, the World Food Programme has undertaken 383 flights transporting more than 5 376 passengers to destinations around the world.
