The final two Australian correspondents working for Australian media in China have been rushed out of the country, after local police demanded interviews with both journalists.
The ABC’s Bill Birtles and the Australian Financial Review’s Michael Smith found themselves involved in an extraordinary diplomatic standoff, with both men sheltering in Australian diplomatic compounds in recent days.
Seven Chinese police officers arrived on Birtles’ doorstep last week, demanding he submit to questioning and informing him he was banned from leaving the country.
