Nigeria News: Who stole our Olympic Gold?

With so many talented sports people in Nigeria – why has our Nigeria Olympics Team not won any medals – surely it can’t be the fault of the whole team? BattaBox heads to the sports stadium to find out why.

“There is no hope for us in Nigeria when it comes to sport – the sport that we do here is to steal money,” says one man.

One thing is clear, despite all the problems – from football to Kung-fun, Volleyball to Roller-skating – the Olympics are an inspiration to all Nigerian athletes. As one sportsman at Lagos Stadium explains:

“It’s an inspiration for young and upcoming players … most of these players, having it in their mind that they want to be at the top.”

But as almost everyone we interviewed explains – the problem is lack of investment due to corruption:

“There are no facilities at all for the athletes, we don’t go on tours, we don’t go for anything.”

But the problem of corruption and accountability in Nigerian sports spread much further than just stadiums and playing fields – with no electricity, most people are finding it difficult to simply just watch the Nigeria Olympics Team in London.

“There is no electricity for gods sake, there is no power – we can’t watch anything. We can’t watch anything, we don’t know what is going on – we have to burn fuel and generators to watch anything.”
