Celebs pause their socials for #StopHateForProfit campaign

People on Instagram today may have noticed their feeds being a bit quieter than usual. That’s because a bunch of celebrities froze their social media accounts today for something called #StopHateForProfit. The campaign is calling on social media companies to better control racism and hate speech on their platforms.

A lot of people reckon that sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter allow messages of racism, violence and hate to spread through the community. It’s why celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio and Katy Perry have all pressed paused on their online activities. They say social media companies need to do more to find and remove groups focused on spreading hate racism & misinformation. They say it’s especially important because the 2020 US election is right around the corner.

You see, if people see fake news about a certain candidate, it can affect how they vote, which could affect the election. Back in July, the same campaign called on big companies to pull their ads from Facebook. More than 1000 different companies like Adidas, Coca-Cola and Microsoft all paused their advertising, saying they didn’t want to be making profits off of hateful messages or fake news.

Since then, Facebook has come out and said they don’t want hate on their site, and that they remove 3 million pieces of hate speech every month. They also say they work with fact-checkers across the globe to try and stamp out fake news, but a lot of people say that hasn’t been enough and there’s still more that needs to be done to make sure social media is a safe place for everyone.

VICTORIA COVID CASES
There’s been some good news in Victoria’s battle to get COVID-19 under control. For the first time in almost 3 months, the state recorded under 30 new daily cases. Regional Victoria has also entered step 3 of its recovery roadmap, which means people can finally leave their homes for any reason and have small gatherings in public. Accommodation is also allowed to reopen & hospitality business can welcome back customers after weeks of takeaway only.

WORLD RECORD HOLDERS FOR 2020
Since the Guinness World Records first came out in 1954, we’ve been treated to some of the world’s most weird and wonderful achievements. Every year, its officials measure, document and authorise the feats of humans, animals, even buildings, and now the latest additions to the record books have just been released!

Let’s start with Frank. He’s just taken home the record for the world’s shortest bus driver. Yep, that’s a thing, and coming in at just 136.2cm tall, you can see why he’s made it into the book. Next up we have speed demon Zorawar Singh from India, who has smashed the most skips on roller skates in 30 seconds. How many skips? He scored a massive 147 skips in 30 seconds. Now to one of the youngest new record holders, 11 year old Eche from Nigeria. He scored a massive 111 keepie uppies with one soccer ball while balancing another one on his head!

Meanwhile, if you thought records were just for humans, think again! Rat duo Freddie and Frankie, also known as ‘the boys, have smashed the record for most alternating paw tricks by a rat in 30 seconds with 28 tricks, and the ‘most jumps through a hoop by a rat in 30 seconds’ with eight leaps.

POSSUM BABY RESCUED
A mother brushtail possum has been reunited with her joey. She got a helping hand from the RSPCA who rescued her from a drainpipe, but they noticed a little while later she was missing a baby. So they went back out, found little joey, and brought it back to its very relieved mum.

FACE MASK WITH EARS
A Hungarian conductor is hoping his invention will revolutionize the way concert-goers perceive music forever! It’s a face mask, featuring what appear to be plastic hands. Apparently, they enhance sound and “emulate church acoustics, with warm undertones and clearer, sharper contours”, whatever that means. But if the conductor says it makes a difference, I believe him. And apparently, so do all these people.

SKY DINNER
Make sure your seatbelts fastened and your tray tables are upright because we’re going sky high for this one. Or maybe just 50 meters. Yeah we can settle for 50 meters. A dining-in-the-sky experience in Belgium has welcomed back guests from lockdown to feast on high while dangling off the hook end of a crane. Which sounds terrifying. And very scenic.
