Ontario Premier Doug Ford on Wednesday, alongside Deputy Premier Christine Elliott and Education Minister Stephen Lecce, announced an interactive screening tool for students, teachers and support staff available on Ontario’s government website that can be used to help screen for symptoms of COVID-19.
Ford said over 500 additional nurses have been hired for schools and is well on its way to its target of 625 nursing positions for schools. In addition, 1,300 cleaning staff, 2,600 new teachers and education staff are also being added.
The premier also discussed impending changes to Ontario’s social gathering rules. While not providing any specific details, Ford said there would be “severe, severe fines” for those not following the rules, and promised that they’d be the “highest in the country.”
The current limit for gatherings is 50 people indoors and 100 outdoors.
Ontario reported 315 new cases of the novel coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the provincial total to 45,383.
Wednesday’s case count is a significant increase from Tuesday, which saw 251 cases and also higher than Monday which saw 313 new cases.
It also marks the largest increase within 24 hours since June 7.
According to Wednesday’s provincial report, 77 new cases were recorded in Toronto, 61 in Ottawa, 54
in Peel Region, 37 in York Region and 24 in Durham Region.
All other public health units in Ontario reported 10 or fewer cases.
