Nigeria Business: Mrs Oluchi sells aluminium accessories in Lagos – but her male customers want her sell much, much more.
“Especially for us young girls – when a young man comes to buy from you they demand for you to go to bed with them,” Mrs Oluchi explains from her small market stall.
Mrs Oluchi has been running her business for seven years but she says there are a lot of challenges especially for “young girls.”
She says sometimes if you tell them – “don’t worry, next time, when you come – I will give you that.” They may buy, but next time, they will ask again and if she refuses, they will buy from her friends.
“If I have ten customers – ten of them have to sleep with me – what will my husband enjoy from the marriage?” she says.
A recent report by DFID highlights the disparities between men and women in Nigeria. For example, women run only 20% of enterprises in the formal sector and only 15% of women in Nigeria have a bank account.
But, Oluchi adds, not all men are the same:
“Some will be god-fearing and will buy from you without anything.”
