Art collides with fashion in new exhibition

On the face of it, there may seem little to connect the impressionist masterpieces of Henri Matisse and the catwalk extravagance of Issey Miyake. However, a new London exhibition is proving that the worlds of art and fashion overlap more often than you might think. `Addressing the Century: 100 Years of Art and Fashion’, now running at the Hayward Gallery, tells the intriguing tale of how key figures from the worlds of art and fashion have contributed to some of this century’s most radical visual innovations. Beginning in turn of the century Paris with the fashion designer who liberated women from the corset, Paul Poiret, it traces his links with Matisse and Dufy, and their shared enthusiasm for the `Orientalist’ colour and decoration of the Ballets Russes. The exhibition also devotes much space to the 60s explosion of creativity that spawned experimentation with performance, new media and materials by artists like Lucio Fontana and designers such as Mary Quant and Paco Rabanne.
