Conor McGregor retiring…not a headline anymore!

Nowadays, it’s almost expected from Conor McGregor to announce his retirement from MMA from time to time.

He’s yet again decided to go for another controversial retirement, immediately following UFC 250. This is the third time that McGregor decided to call it quits.

We’ve listed a timeline outlining the three times that the UFC start decided to go for retirement.

 

• Conor McGregor’s first retirement – April 19, 2016

  Back when everyone took the news by surprise, the Irishman had announced his retirement just before a rematch with Nate Diaz. It was in 2016 when McGregor had decided not to show up for several media events concerning his fight with Diaz.

  UFC president Dana White then managed to convince McGregor to still feature in the Diaz fight. The fight turned out to be one of the best fights of that year. This first retirement however only lasted a month and a half.

 

• Conor McGregor’s second retirement – March 26, 2019

  The second time McGregor decided to quit, was even more controversial than the first. He made the announcement just 5 months after his defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229.

  For obvious reasons, many expected the former featherweight and lightweight champion to return to the octagon once again. And that’s what happened when the Irish fighter returned to action just nine days following his announcement.

  
  One must mention however that it wasn’t a simple situation for the controversial fighter. McGregor had been involved in a brawl that broke out with Nurmagomedov after their fight. In return, McGregor was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for 6 months. 
  

 

• Conor McGregor’s third retirement – June 7, 2020

  While we think this won’t be the last retirement, it’s possible that this one will go on for a bit more than the previous retirements. McGregor blamed it on lack of motivation when he announced his third retirement within a span of just four years.

  However, we think it’s more a problem relating to the situation that the UFC is currently in. Financial issues caused by the pandemic were another factor which “forced” McGregor to take this decision.
