Coronavirus UK LIVE: Death toll hits 40,883 as shops to reopen on Monday

ALL NON-ESSENTIAL shops will be able to reopen from June 15, Business secretary Alok Sharma has confirmed.

Mr Sharma gave all non-essential shops the go-ahead to welcome back customers in today’s coronavirus briefing but only if they’re coronavirus secure.

This followed Gavin Williamson’s announcement on plans to roll back the reopening of schools.

The Education Secretary said his department was working to “bring all children back to school from September”, he added, stressing exams would take place next year.

He said: “We continue to follow the best scientific advice and believe this cautious, phased return is the most sensible course of action to take.”

The coronavirus death toll in the UK now stands at 40,883.

However, according to the Office for National Statistics the true death toll is actually much higher – 51,7166 as of Tuesday, June 9.
