Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Monday, 27th April, 2026.
Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has cautioned against reported moves by the government to suspend political activities in some Northern states ahead of the 2027 elections over growing challenges of insecurity.
Atiku, in a statement on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, warned that such a move would disenfranchise the citizens of such areas and rob them of the opportunity to participate in a legal democratic process.
Naija News understands that Atiku’s reaction followed reports that the Senate may be considering suspending political activities in some states, including Borno, Benue, and Plateau, over rising cases of insecurity in such areas.
The chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) warned that suspending democratic and political activities in affected areas is not the solution to the security challenges affecting the people.
He warned that such action may simply weaken electoral participation in key Northern states, and raise questions about the integrity of Nigeria’s democratic process.
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has denied a viral claim suggesting that the Federal Government has introduced a new tax on vehicles starting from July 1.
Naija News reports that the service said the information circulating online is false and was not issued by it or any government body. The message, which has been shared widely as an infographic, claimed that owners of private, commercial, and company vehicles must pay a new tax through online platforms or approved banks.
In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Chairman of the NRS, Dare Adekambi, explained that the content did not come from any official source. He also noted that the website mentioned in the viral post is not the correct official platform of the agency. According to him, the approved website of the NRS is different from the one being shared in the false message.
The agency stressed that no new vehicle tax has been introduced by the Federal Government as claimed. It warned members of the public to be careful with information they see on social media, especially when it comes from unknown or unverified sources.
Adekambi advised Nigerians to depend only on official communication channels for accurate updates on tax matters and government policies. He added that misleading posts like the viral infographic are meant to confuse the public and should be ignored.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to defect to its platform and contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a post shared on Sunday via its official 𝕏 handle, the party hinted at a limited window for both politicians to make a decision.
“All we need right now. Just all we need. 2 weeks to the deadline,” the party wrote.
The post featured an image of Obi and Kwankwaso shaking hands, accompanied by the caption: “Nigeria will be OK.”
The appeal comes days after supporters of the two politicians unveiled the “OK Movement,” aimed at mobilising support for a potential joint ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its planned indefinite nationwide strike following fresh commitments by the Federal Government (FG) on allowances, arrears, and training funding.
The decision was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held virtually on Saturday, April 26.
The communiqué was jointly signed by the NARD President, Mohammad Suleiman; Secretary-General, Shuaibu Ibrahim; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Abdulmajid Ibrahim.
According to the association, the decision followed high-level engagements with key government officials and stakeholders across the health and public service sectors.
NARD said its NEC reviewed interventions by the Vice President, as well as the Ministers of Health, Labour, and Finance, alongside discussions with agencies such as the Budget Office, the Office of the Accountant General, and IPPIS.
Other stakeholders involved in the talks included the Nigerian Medical Association and the Department of State Services.
The Nigerian Army on Sunday, disclosed that a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, identified as Abdulsamad Jamiu, lost his life during a shootout between troops and armed robbers in Abuja.
According to a statement by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters Guards Brigade, Lieutenant Olawuyi Odunola, the unfortunate incident occurred when troops of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group, on routine night patrol, responded to a distress call following an armed robbery attack in Shagari Estate, Dei Dei area of Abuja.
He explained that the troops came under gunfire from the fleeing armed robbers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire during which the corps member was caught in the gunfire and later died as a result of injuries sustained.
Odunola added in the statement made available to Naija News that a thorough investigation has been launched to fully ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He extended deep condolences to the family of the deceased, the NYSC, and all who are affected by what he described as a painful loss.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State over remarks he made at an opposition summit in Ibadan, accusing him of inciting violence and threatening national security.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party described Makinde’s reference to “Operation Wetie” as reckless and dangerous.
The party said it was disturbing that a sitting governor, who doubles as the chief security officer of his state, would invoke a violent episode in Nigeria’s political history.
“The APC categorically condemns Governor Makinde’s incitement as reckless, and a clear and present threat to peace and national security,” the statement read.
The party urged security and intelligence agencies to take the development seriously and act to protect lives and property.
It warned that Makinde’s comments could fuel unrest and lawlessness if left unchecked.
The State Wing Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has suspended its ongoing strike action involving primary and secondary school teachers with immediate effect.
The SWEC Chairman, Abdullahi Shafa, disclosed this on Sunday at a news conference in Gwagwalada, Abuja.
Shafa said the decision was reached after an emergency meeting convened to assess the intervention of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in the industrial dispute, which began on April 20, 2026.
According to him, the council reviewed the minister’s commitments and resolved to suspend the strike in the interest of students and the education sector.
The union revealed that the minister had approved a monthly financial commitment of ₦5 billion to address teachers’ welfare and outstanding entitlements.
Popular filmmaker and actress, Funke Akindele, has dismissed claims that she snubbed Fuji star, Wasiu Pasuma, at a recent public event, describing the viral narrative as misleading.
The controversy followed a video shared on 𝕏 by a user, which was captioned, “Moment Funke Akindele snubbed Pasuma in public. This is not looking good at all.”
The clip, which circulated widely, appeared to show Akindele ignoring the singer during a crowded indoor event.
Reacting on Sunday, Akindele refuted the claim, insisting there was no incident of disrespect between her and the Fuji star.
While the viral clip showed only a brief moment where Pasuma appeared seated and looking at his phone, a longer version of the footage painted a different picture.
Nollywood actress, Wumi Toriola, took a swipe at influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa after he reportedly addressed her in a way she felt was disrespectful.
Naija News reports that the incident happened at an event in Lagos as Wumi was exchanging greetings with fellow actresses Ini Edo and Eniola Ajao. While in conversation, Enioluwa moved closer to greet her and mentioned her name during the exchange. Wumi immediately reacted in anger, pushing him slightly away and questioning why he would address her in that manner.
Enioluwa quickly tried to calm the situation by explaining that he had actually referred to her with respect, saying “Aunty Wumi” while greeting her. However, Wumi maintained that she expected a more respectful form of greeting, stressing that they were not on the same level and that proper respect should be shown, especially by younger people.
