Uganda Celebrates HTTC Students’ Success At Ladha Za Afrika Contest

Students of the Hotel and Tourism Training College (HTTC) who excelled in the recently concluded Ladha Za Afrika Culinary Competitions in Nairobi, Kenya, have been officially recognised by the Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Col (Rtd) Tom Butime.

Paul Terran Lugobe and Brenda Alanyo represented the college and Uganda at the competition held from April 13 to 15 under the theme “Ladha Za Afrika: Promoting Africanicity in cookery and service.”

The event attracted top hospitality talent from across the continent.

Lugobe emerged second runner-up in the culinary category, while Alanyo won the designer award in the barista category. Lugobe is also set to represent Uganda at the World Skills Competition scheduled for September in China.

Presenting the awards, HTTC Principal Richard Kawere commended government support, saying it has helped improve the quality of training at the institution.

“We are now able to compete globally, and our students are exposed to state-of-the-art training facilities, which has increased their competitive edge,” Kawere said.

The minister commended the students for their achievements, noting that their performance reflects creativity, discipline, and the high quality of training at HTTC.

“You are not just students; you are ambassadors of our culture, flavours, and hospitality,” he said, urging them to continue striving for excellence and use the achievement as a foundation for greater contribution to the industry.

Lugobe expressed gratitude to the institution for the training and support that enabled him to compete at an international level.

“It is a great honour to represent my college and country. I commend HTTC management and my instructors for giving me the opportunity to compete at such a high level,” he said.

The Hotel and Tourism Training College was first established in 1994 as the Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (HTTI).

It was re-established in 2015 under the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI) Act as the Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute, operating under the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, with an expanded mandate that included research.

Following the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Act of March 2025, the institution was renamed the Hotel and Tourism Training College (HTTC). Under the current arrangement, the Ministry of Education and Sports oversees curriculum implementation and student assessment, while the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities supervises administrative functions.
