Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Wednesday, 6th May, 2026.
President Bola Tinubu has met with global investors in Paris, France, emphasising transparency and fiscal discipline, and explaining the rationale for the swift implementation of bold reforms by his administration.
According to a statement made available to Naija News on Tuesday by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the investors were from Citibank and France’s Amundi, led by Valerie Baudson.
There were also BlueCrest, the Britain- and South Africa-based Ninety One, Kirkoswald Capital, Principal Finisterre, US groups Prudential Global Investment Management (PGIM) and Mesarete Capital.
President Tinubu, who left Nigeria on Sunday for a three-nation trip, said the economic reform program of his administration includes measures to remove economic distortions and stabilise macroeconomic indicators, laying the foundation for sustained inclusive growth.
He said his government is committed to deepening reforms, enhancing transparency across the oil value chain, and implementing a multi-pronged security strategy, including police decentralisation and disrupting terrorist financing.
The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, discharged and acquitted a former Head of Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, of money laundering charges involving ₦570 million.
Naija News reports that the judgment came six years after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed an 18-count charge against her and eight others over allegations bordering on fraud, kickbacks, Duty Tour Allowances, estacodes and conference fees.
Justice James Omotosho, in his ruling on separate no-case submissions filed by Oyo-Ita and her co-defendants, held that the applications had merit and that the prosecution failed to establish a case requiring the defendants to enter a defence.
The judge said the case filed by the EFCC “was built on the quicksand of speculations, suspicions and shoddy investigation.”
“I must say here that the case presented by the prosecution has no weight whatsoever,” Omotosho said.
Justice Omotosho held that the prosecution failed to prove the crucial elements of money laundering.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has announced a major operational reform in the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) with the creation and nationwide deployment of Violent Crime Response Units.
Naija News reports that the new units will replace the Special Weapons and Tactics teams across the country.
Disu disclosed this on Tuesday during an emergency meeting with Commissioners of Police and senior officers at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
He said the VCRUs would operate across the 36 state commands and the Federal Capital Territory.
The IGP explained that the units, which evolved from the now-defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad structure, would operate under the direct supervision of state Commissioners of Police.
According to him, the commissioners will be fully responsible for the conduct and operational outcomes of the units in their commands.
Disu said members of the VCRUs had undergone intensive training in tactical operations, intelligence gathering, human rights compliance and rules of engagement.
He added that the units would rely strictly on credible intelligence and would not be deployed arbitrarily.
The fourth defendant in the alleged coup against President Bola Tinubu, told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday that he was ‘misled.’
The suspect, identified as Zekeri Umoru, in a recorded video statement played in the court, denied any knowledge of plans to overthrow President Tinubu.
Naija News understands that Umoru, who works in the maintenance department of the Presidential Villa with Julius Berger Nigeria, made the statement in a video recording tendered by the prosecution as part of its evidence against six defendants standing trial over the alleged plot.
Court proceedings opened on a solemn note following the announcement by defence counsel of the death of a colleague, U.H. Kamra, who reportedly died in a car accident after the previous day’s sitting.
Presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, led the court in a minute’s silence before directing that the trial continue.
In the video evidence presented in open court, Umoru told investigators that his involvement began through the third defendant, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, who is attached to the Presidential Clinic. He said Ibrahim introduced him to an individual identified as Hassan Mohammed, later revealed to be Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji.
Umoru explained that he initially believed Ma’aji to be “a civilian businessman” interested in offering him electrical work at a building under construction.

Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Tuesday publicly recognised Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs.
Naija News reports that Ganduje acknowledged Sanusi during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, Murtala Sule Garo, at the Government House, Kano.
During his remarks, the former governor greeted Sanusi and addressed him by his full traditional title, a gesture that drew loud applause from dignitaries and guests at the event.
The development marked the first time Ganduje would openly recognise Sanusi in that capacity since their widely reported fallout.
In 2020, while serving as governor, Ganduje deposed Sanusi as Emir of Kano.
However, Governor Abba Yusuf later reinstated Sanusi and removed Aminu Ado Bayero, whom Ganduje had appointed after Sanusi’s removal.
Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has declared his feud with Wizkid will not end, saying that he does not plan to settle the issue.
Naija News reports that the disagreement between the two artistes started after Wizkid made a comment comparing himself to Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. This came after Seun had earlier warned fans to stop placing Wizkid side by side with his late father.
Speaking during the Afro Fusion podcast, Seun Kuti was asked if both of them had moved past the issue.
He responded by making it known that the matter is still unresolved and will remain that way.
According to him, the situation cannot be fixed because he believes his late father was disrespected. He made it clear that once such a line is crossed, there is no chance of repairing the relationship.
The singer added that he has nothing more to say about Wizkid, but maintained that the conflict between them is permanent.
Nigerian singer, Habeeb Badmus, popularly known as Portable, has alleged that his defeat to Carter Efe at the Chaos in the Ring 4 event in Lagos was manipulated.
Portable claimed the fight was stopped unfairly to prevent organisers from paying out huge sums allegedly staked on his victory.
The singer lost the celebrity boxing bout by unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring the contest 27-30 in favour of Efe after three rounds.
Naija News reports that the result ended Portable’s reign as celebrity boxing champion, following his previous victories over Charles Okocha and Speed Darlington.
‘They Couldn’t Pay ₦23 Billion Bet On Me’
Reacting after the bout, the ZaZoo crooner insisted that he was cheated and that the outcome was influenced by money allegedly wagered on him.
Arsenal are heading to the UEFA Champions League final after a tense 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid sealed a 2-1 aggregate triumph at the Emirates Stadium.
It is Arsenal’s first final in the competition for 20 years and it came courtesy of a decisive first-half strike from Bukayo Saka.
The night began with nerves inside a buzzing Emirates, and Atlético nearly silenced the crowd early on. Julián Alvarez dragged a shot wide before Declan Rice produced a crucial goal-saving tackle to deny Giuliano Simeone.
Arsenal gradually took control. Gabriel Magalhães fired narrowly wide and Myles Lewis-Skelly flashed a dangerous ball across the six-yard box as the hosts pinned Atlético back. The breakthrough arrived just before the interval when Jan Oblak parried Leandro Trossard’s effort straight to Saka, who reacted quickest to finish from close range.
Atlético pushed hard after the restart. Simeone rounded David Raya but Gabriel recovered in time to clear. Antoine Griezmann then forced a sharp save as the visitors chased the equaliser.
Arsenal had chances to kill the tie. Viktor Gyökeres blazed over after meeting a cross from Piero Hincapié, while late drama followed when Alexander Sørloth missed a clear opportunity that could have forced extra time.
Instead, Arsenal’s defence held firm to secure a ninth European clean sheet this season. Mikel Arteta’s side remain unbeaten in the competition and now turn their attention to the final in Budapest on 30 May.
English midfielder, Phil Foden has agreed in principle to sign a new four-year contract with Manchester City, extending his stay at the Etihad until 2030 with an option for a further year.
Phil Foden, 25, had been due to see his current deal expire next summer, but the new agreement highlights the club’s long-term faith in one of their academy stars despite a recent dip in form.
Foden has not scored since 14 December and was used from the bench in Monday’s six-goal thriller against Everton. The result left City five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, albeit with a game in hand in the Premier League title race.
The new deal arrives as Foden pushes to secure his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the summer’s FIFA World Cup. Tuchel recently warned the midfielder’s spot in the 24-man group is not guaranteed, despite him starting both matches in England’s final training camp before the tournament.
