Boys Like Girls are in the midst of their Soundtrack of Your Life tour, where they’re celebrating the anniversaries of their 2006 self-titled and 2009’s Love Drunk by playing them in full. Before their sold-out Brooklyn show last month, frontman Martin Johnson joined the latest episode of AltPress: In Session.
Sitting down with Editor-in-Chief Anna Zanes, Johnson opened up about impostor syndrome, gratitude, and inviting his 18-year-old and 22-year-old selves onstage for the milestone album play. “‘Look what you did.’ You know what I mean?” he reflects. “It’s like these millennials living out their teenage dream, just hands in the sky, eyes closed, and they’re illuminated with floodlights. We have these really backlit sets. I could see everybody’s eyes, and I’m like, ‘OK, come onstage, 22-year-old Marty. Look what you did, dude. You did pretty good. I know you were ashamed of yourself for a while, but just check it out.’”

He also spoke about how different his rider looks now, versus in 2008 — from Patron, condoms, and jelly beans to mineral water, whole milk yogurt, and cottage cheese. Elsewhere, he shouted out Boston, touched on nostalgia, and contemplated how we currently live in a culture that informs music, rather than the other way around.
