Semi Ajayi Returns To Premier League As Hull City Win Dramatic Play-off Final

Nigeria defender, Semi Ajayi, will play Premier League football next season after Hull City sealed promotion with a dramatic 1-0 win over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

The Tigers looked set for extra time before Oli McBurnie struck deep into stoppage time to send Hull back to the top flight after nine years away.

Ajayi, making one of the biggest appearances of his career, produced a composed display at the heart of Hull’s defence alongside John Egan as the Tigers frustrated Middlesbrough for long spells in a tense and scrappy game.

The decisive moment arrived in the fifth minute of added time. Yu Hirakawa’s cross slipped through the hands of goalkeeper Sol Brynn and McBurnie reacted quickest, stabbing home from close range to spark wild celebrations among the Hull supporters.

Ajayi, 32, joined Hull City on a free transfer last summer after leaving West Bromwich Albion, where he spent six seasons and established himself as one of the Championship’s most reliable defenders without managing to secure promotion.

Now, after years of near misses, the 54-cap Super Eagles centre-back has finally earned a shot in the Premier League.

Hull’s promotion also marked a remarkable turnaround under Sergej Jakirovic. The club had finished in the lower half of the table the previous season but built momentum at the right time to storm through the play-offs.

Their semi-final campaign began with a goalless first leg against Millwall before a clinical 2-0 away win at The Den booked their place at Wembley.

The final itself carried extra controversy. Naija News reports that Middlesbrough were initially out of the play-offs after losing to Southampton in the semi-finals. But the south-coast club were later expelled after admitting to filming opponents during matches, including Middlesbrough’s training session before the first leg.

An independent commission also handed Southampton a four-point deduction for next season after ruling the club’s manager had authorised the spying operation.
