Egypt began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a strong performance, holding Belgium to a 1-1 draw in their opening Group G match today, Morocco World News reports.
The draw means Egypt are still searching for their first World Cup win since making their debut in 1934.
The Pharaohs took the lead in the 19th minute at Seattle Stadium through Emam Ashour.
Mohamed Salah, playing on his 34th birthday, found Ashour in space before the Al Ahly midfielder fired a powerful shot past Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Belgium controlled more of the ball during the first half but struggled to create clear chances against Egypt’s compact defense.
Courtois was forced into another save in the 33rd minute when Mostafa Abdel Raouf “Zico” tested him with a low shot from a tight angle.
Belgium increased the pressure in the second half as Kevin De Bruyne became more involved in the match.

The midfielder came close to equalizing in the 53rd minute when his free kick struck the post.
Egypt also had opportunities to extend their lead. Salah saw a header saved before Ashour missed the rebound, while Marmoush caused problems with his pace on several counterattacks.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia then introduced Romelu Lukaku in the 66th minute, hoping the striker could change the game.
Seconds after entering the field, Lukaku put pressure on Egypt’s defenders as Thomas Meunier sent a dangerous cross into the penalty area.
The ball was eventually diverted into the net by Mohamed Hany, with the goal officially recorded as an own goal.
Egypt earn important point
Belgium continued to push for a winner, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir and the Egyptian defense held firm during the closing stages.
The result gives both teams one point and leaves Group G open ahead of the match between Iran and New Zealand.
The Pharaohs will next face New Zealand in Vancouver on June 21 before meeting Iran in Seattle on June 26.
Belgium will play Iran in their second group match before ending the group stage against New Zealand
