Shooting red carpet interviews can be a very common gig for photographers and cinematographers. This is especially true in Los Angeles. Whether it’s a local film premiere or the Academy Awards, knowing how to light people well -and quickly- will help your work stand out from the rest! Today, cinematographer and photographer Shawn Corrigan teaches us how to combine lighting modifiers to create a traditional red carpet interview lighting setup.
In this video, Shawn shows us how to light a very common red carpet interview set up. This is a setup that features two people and can be done indoors and outdoors. It also includes one close up shot, which in this case is for the person conducting the interview.
The main techniques that we will be discussing today are: Controlling for your environment, Lighting one light at a time, & Knowing who has a close up. Controlling for your environment refers to being able to light well in whatever situation you are in. Sometimes you’re indoors, sometimes you’re outdoors, and you have to be able to control the lighting in any situation. Lighting one light at a time is when you begin building your lighting setup with the key light and work your way out from there. The key light is going to be the most important facet of your setup, and needs to look good in both wide and close up shots; so it’s best to start with that one! Knowing who has a close up refers to being aware of which person in your interview is going to have a close up shot, so that you can light them the best. Not everyone is going to have a close up, so you need to make sure that one who does is provided with good lighting on them, from both angles.
Ultimately, as filmmakers we want to tell stories and make people look their best. Interviews can be an interesting opportunity for storytelling because the story unfolds on screen. Being able to light interviews impressively therefore gives one the power of becoming a better storyteller! However, anyone who has shot red carpet events can tell you that there’s no time to waste. Planning out the shoot ahead of time can be crucial to getting good results because of the limited time and space you get on the red carpet. This video will give you the techniques needed to make the most out of your next shoot.
