Red Bull Racing star Max Verstappen is improving with each race that goes by and that surely didn’t go unnoticed last weekend. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff also believes Verstappen will help Red Bull contend the 2020 F1 championship.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing had a spectacular win in the 70th Anniversary GP. He’s now just 30 points behind Lewis Hamilton in the driver’s standing.
In fact, Wolff had already warned that the season was far from over in the British GP weekend. This despite Mercedes’ dominant start to the new season. He says that last weekend’s win from Verstappen further proved that it is far from a one-way race for the title.
“I think we have,” Wolff said to Motorsport.com when asked if F1 now has a title fight. “I kind of enjoy the situation because everyone was saying, ‘OK, this is going to be a walk in the park for Mercedes,’ and here we go.
“That wasn’t at all a walk in the park. We were certainly not the quickest car, maybe not even the second quickest car.
“We have seen in the past that the hot conditions somehow don’t suit our car, but as I said before, it’s much more complex than that. I’m actually up for the challenge.
“We have probably the quickest package, but the quickest package also involves the most downforce, and the most downforce works the tyres hardest. In that respect, we have to learn how to tune the car to help the tyres survive a little bit.
“I’m really curious to see and interested to see how we’re going to do in Barcelona. We have a handful of days to understand, and there is nothing better than a great challenge.”
What Red Bull Racing need now is a confirmation of the good form from Max Verstappen in the coming races. Next up is the Spanish GP in Barcelona and this brings Red Bull fond memories from the 2016 Grand Prix. This race, in particular, was in fact also Max Verstappen’s first time standing on top of the podium. Will he be able to replicate the success next weekend?
