Ellen DeGeneres is a known name around the world. All thanks to her show, Ellen has become more popular than some of the biggest celebrities of our time. However, she wasn’t always the comedy superstar that she is today. Many, many years ago, Ellen was just another college dropout working odd jobs to keep her going.
Life changed at the age of 23 when she started performing in comedy clubs. In 1984, after winning the Showtime’s Funniest Person in America Contest, she started touring the country and became quite a popular name in the comedy circuit. In 1986, Johnny Carson invited Ellen to The Tonight Show, which earned her the distinction of being the first female comedian to sit on Carson’s couch. After her appearance on The Tonight Show, Ellen became a regular on the talk show circuit, often making appearances and performing on shows like The Late Show with David Letterman, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning, America and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. These performances made her a known name.
In 1994, Ellen bagged the main role of Ellen Morgan in the ABC sitcom These Friends of Mine (the show’s name was later changed to Ellen). Her wit and immense screen presence immediately won over the audiences. However, the show’s ratings plummeted after Ellen’s character came out as gay on the show and Ellen, herself, officially came out in Time Magazine in 1997. This was a time when homosexuality was a taboo subject and Ellen’s coming out had a direct impact on her show and career. A year later, the show was cancelled and Ellen couldn’t find any work for several years, which left her almost broke. Life changed once again when daytime television came calling. Ellen quickly mastered the format, establishing herself as the queen of daytime television.
Ellen has built an empire with her ‘be kind to each other’ mantra — after all, someone who has been through so much in life must understand the importance of being kind, just and compassionate. On her show, Ellen comes across as funny, kind, warm-hearted and empathetic. Thus, when in late March of this year, Nikkie De Jager, a Dutch beauty YouTuber, announced that she found Ellen ‘cold and distant’ during an interview, the world was shocked. However, the world was more shocked when a Twitter thread discussing stories about how Ellen Degeneres is one of the meanest people alive gathered more than 200 replies in just a short amount of time.
