Why US is after Adesina

The on-going investigation into the 20-point allegations of “impunity and bad governance” against Nigeria’s first President of the African Development Bank has full backing of the United States.

The US action was fuelled by whistle blowers who have accused Mr Adesina of major conflicts of interest in his dealings with current and former employees, unethical conduct and preferential treatment. Mr Adesina was also accused of favouring his fellow Nigerians.

Earlier, an investigation committee was set up. The committee carried out his assignment and cleared Adesina of any wrong doing. However, The United States was not happy with the fact that Adesina was totally exonerated of all allegations made against him. The US insisted on a fresh probe of Adesina. Adesina has repeatedly denied any wrong doing.

Critics have accused the United States of plotting to stop the second term tenure of Adesina who is going unopposed for another five years term. Observers believed that what US wants to achieve is to dent Adesina’s clean record and label him a corrupt man.

The bank has 54 African countries as members and 27 non-regional members, including the US. Nigeria is the highest shareholder of the bank followed by the US. No African leader is supporting the US probe.

The US has also been accused of exercising overbearing influence in the affairs of the Africa’s indigenous bank.
