London Fashion Week has kicked off, with a notable absence of big British designers.
Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood and Nicol Farhi have all defected to New York.
But fashion watchers say talent spotters will not be disappointed as there’s a host of new talent set to fill the gap – making London a top destination for buyers, stylists and photographers hoping to glimpse the next big thing.
Britain’s best known designers may have decamped abroad, but there are many foreigners keen to take their places on the catwalk.
These included the New Zealand Four, who launched their Spring/Summer collections at London Fashion Week on Tuesday.
The four designers include Karen Walker, World, Zambesi and Nom D.
Despite the notable absence of big names, fashion watchers are anticipating an exciting London Fashion Week further bolstering London’s roll as hub for burgeoning European urban style.
Resident London designer Wayne Hemingway, who also showed on Tuesday, presented a humorous, individual take on the eclectic London street style.
His men’s and women’s designs have fans across the globe.
After the show, Hemingway said he had chosen to show in London because of its passionately non-elitist spirit.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
” I think we are going to see more the idea that supermodels are less important. That fashion is more accessible and that designer fashion isn’t just for rich people. We’re making big strides in that direction – trying to keep prices down so that you can buy designer fashion all over the place – you don’t have to hunt it down as much.”
