Paul Smith and Julien Macdonald keep the British fashion coming

As the “cool britannia” hype continues to circulate in the press circles covering London fashion week, Paul Smith, one of the UK’s most successful designers, ignored it all and launched his first womenswear show at the Chelsea Bridge Film Studios beside the Thames River. Smith has become somewhat of an institution in England for his practical but classy range of menswear. Noticing his popularity with women, Smith introduced his womenswear line in 1994. The show was a combination of two styles; first up, menswear tailored for a female silhouette, followed by graceful, feminine leisure wear, inspired by the smoking jacket days of Noel Coward. Meanwhile, in classy New Bond Street, the people at Louis Vuitton were frantically putting the final touches to their new boutique before their launch party later that evening. Last but not least, Scottish designer, Julien Macdonald had a few surprises under his kilt for his audience when Michael Jackson turned up to take a front row seat at his collection. Journalists, cameramen and the paparazzi were beside themselves with excitement, frantically snapping the masked one for that ultimate scoop-only to find that Macdonald had the last laugh and the whole thing was nothing more than a publicity stunt. The 25 year-old designer nevertheless produced a glittering range of catwalk creations inspired the fairytale world of mythical princesses and deep, dark forests.
