Head to the market and you’ll be dazzled by the vast array of traditional cloth colours, materials and prices – it can be difficult to decide which should to choose to keep you ahead in the Nigerian ladies fashion!
BattaBox headed out into the Lagos markets to run through the most popular traditional Ghanian and Nigerian cloth, prices, colours and more – so you don’t have to…
“We sell to Ibo, Yoruba, Hausa – even the white people are coming here to buy from us!” laughs one Ghanian marketer.
“The best place to buy is on the island,” explains on lady marketer, and then adds with a smile – “Even in this shop!”
Prices range considerably depending on the quality of the Nigerian cloth but can start from 2500 Naira for a tasteful green cloth, 5000 Naira for peach and gold – or as much as 15,000 Naira for a beautiful gold scattered traditional cloth. Some George cloth will sell for 25,000 Naira.
But, as one marketer explains honestly – “Prices vary depending on the condition of the person buying” – so make sure you’re prepared to barter!
It all depends on the occasion – wedding, engagement or traditional – but most marketers we spoke to agreed – “In style now is skirt and wrapper.”
