Education in South Africa: what’s working and what’s not?

The good news and the bad news on education in South Africa. This video outlines key findings drawn from the first three waves of the National Income Dynamics Study (NIDS), South Africa’s first and only national longitudinal (panel) study that provides unique insights into the livelihoods of South Africans over time.

NIDS is an initiative of the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) implemented by the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT). It is the first and only national longitudinal (panel) study of individuals in South Africa. With data collected from 2008, it provides unique insights into the livelihoods of South Africans over time. The study aims to facilitate evidence-based policy-making and contribute to the monitoring of policy implementation. For more information visit
