UK: LONDON: FASHION WEEK CLOSES

Natural Sound

London Fashion Week has come to a close, with more than a hundred designers revealing their spring/summer 2000 collections during the annual extravaganza.

Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood may have gone overseas, but London Fashion Week didn’t let their absence dampen its enthusiastic vision of the clothes for the new millennium.

Among the last to reveal their new collections were Andrew Groves and Japanese designer Michiko Koshino.

On the final day of London Fashion Week on Friday, Andrew Groves was amongst the last designers to unveil his spring/summer 2000 collection.

The colour was white and the look was elegant, cool, feminine and distinctly African.

Fine, sheer fabrics for the body, contrasted with boxing boots for the feet.

Many of the designs were deceptively simple, while others incorporated a tattered look, again in contrast to some classically tailored pieces.

But Grove chose to make his own entrance on the catwalk accompanied by a model wearing one of his more off-beat designs – what can only be described as a rather over-large haystack hat.

Also unveiling her new spring/summer look was Japanese designer Michiko Koshino.

In it she makes use of high-tech fabrics in cool fresh colours.

Renowned for her street culture and use of innovative materials, Koshino’s collection included an eclectic mixture of colourful rice paper, leather and denim.

In what she called a celebration of denim wear, she showed clothes using new and worn denim, cotton in rich indigos and camouflage shades of khaki.

Koshino said she had taken her inspiration from hot summer days and Japanese culture.

Always full of surprises, Koshino’s following within the music and street scene remains strong.

At the end of her show, she drove onto the catwalk on a camouflage print scooter.

Koshino has teamed up with Honda to produce the limited edition scooter, which she says is ecologically fashionable.
