In 1888, a Swedish scientist was going through a French newspaper when he found a news headline that shocked him. “The merchant of death is dead,” the newspaper titled its article. Alfred Nobel who at the time was one of the greatest inventors alive had a rethink of his life. The newspaper had mistaken his brother’s death for his, either way he did not like the legacy he was leaving behind and certainly did not want to be remembered as a merchant of death. The Swedish scientist had made a fortune off of death and destruction. His 355 inventions were mostly weapons and famous amongst them dynamite. So, he decided to turn a new leaf. Nobel willed over 94% of his wealth to establish the Nobel Prize.
Today, the Nobel Prize which includes categories in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Economics and Promotion of Peace are some of the most prestigious awards in the world and have been awarded to over 892 individuals. They are awarded to individuals who are deemed to have conferred the “greatest benefits on mankind.” Some of these individuals have come from Africa and in today’s video we examine the African countries that have produced the most of these individuals.
