African countries still have more to do to achieve Maputo Protocol goals



African countries have made progress in ending harmful traditional practices including early marriages and Female Genital Mutilation over the last five years, but more needs to be one if the goals set up in the Maputo Protocol are to be achieved. A report published by civil society organisation every woman counts indicates that Niger has the highest rate of child marriage sin the world, while Lesotho has the highest rates of gender based violence in Southern Africa. On a positive note South Africa and Namibia have the highest number of women in the Defence Forces on the continent, while Rwanda has the highest number of women Members of Parliament in Africa.
