Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Nigeria’s capital Abuja on Wednesday, as tensions rose over attacks on foreign-owned shops in South Africa.
Footage shows demonstrators hurling rocks and police forces deploying water cannons and tear gas in the streets. The protest took place near a mall where a supermarket of the South African chain Shoprite is located.
Nigeria’s government stepped up security measures on Wednesday, over fears of reprisals against South African businesses in the country.
Protesters took to the streets following a series of assaults against shops owned by Nigerians and foreign nationals in South Africa, which resulted in the killing of at least seven people. Violence in South Africa’s Johannesburg and Pretoria erupted for the first time on Sunday, with a number of shops targeted in xenophobic attacks.
South African president Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the actions, saying that his country is a “home for all.”
