South African airports are expected to soon be abuzz with visitors as business and leisure travel resumes. It follows Home Affairs Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi’s announcement of visa-free access for 11 international countries including Italy, Germany and Hong Kong. Also included, but restricted from leisure travel are Iran, Portugal, the USA and the UK.
This is part of the cautious process of opening up the economy seven months after SA went into lockdown in March. Ironically, South African Airways (SAA) last week suspended all operations, only committing to scheduled flights as rescue practitioners struggle to get the R10-billion cash injection needed to implement a recovery plan.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian Airlines is offering operational assistance to SAA including planes, pilots and maintenance, but refuses to get involved with the local airline’s financial legacy crisis.
