Alaska earthquake – Huge 7.4 magnitude quake strikes off south Alaska sparking tsunami warning along coast


PARTS of southern Alaska are under a tsunami warning, after a giant magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck off of Sand Point.

The National Weather Service confirmed the warning in a tweet on Monday afternoon local time.

The tweet read: “A #tsunami warning is in effect for South Alaska and the Alaska Peninsula due to a 7.4 magnitude #earthquake. No warnings in effect for anywhere else at this time.”

Emergency alerts said that a powerful waves and strong currents could impact coasts nearby.

Residents were advised to stay away from coastal waters, move to high ground, and to keep away from the coast until local officials saw it is safe to return.
