Good morning Nigeria. Welcome to the Naija News roundup of top newspaper headlines in Nigeria for today, Thursday, 7th May, 2026.
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has officially waived the screening requirements for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Naija News reports that the decision clears President Tinubu to participate in the party’s upcoming presidential primary elections without appearing before a screening committee.
At its 188th meeting held on Wednesday, the NWC resolved to deem President Tinubu as duly screened in line with the APC Constitution.
The decision was taken under the powers vested in the committee by Article 13.4 (xiii) and (xiv), which allow it to organise primaries and grant waivers in special circumstances when it serves the best interest of the party.
In a statement signed by APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, after the meeting, the NWC highlighted the overwhelming endorsements and votes of confidence President Tinubu has received from major stakeholders, including the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), the leadership and members of the National Assembly, and other organs of the party at the APC National Summit of May 22, 2025, and subsequent statutory events.
The party noted that, as the incumbent President and leader of the APC, who was already screened and cleared ahead of the 2022 presidential primaries, requiring his physical appearance before another screening committee at this time would be “redundant and unnecessary.”
The Federal Government has barred recipients of honorary degrees from adding “Dr” to their names.
The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa announced the development at a media briefing at Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.
He said the decision was taken at the Federal Executive Council meeting, which held on April 30.
Alausa said the policy is designed to restore public confidence in the integrity of academic titles.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC), of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), has agreed to suspend the ongoing indefinite strike it embarked upon on April 30.
Naija News reports that the unions took the decision to suspend their strike action after a meeting with the federal government’s Expanded Renegotiation Committee on Tuesday.
JAC explained that the strike is being suspended to allow the committee to obtain the approval of the President, Bola Tinubu, for any further review of the government’s earlier offer.
The statement, signed by the JAC Chairman and National President of SSANU, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, and the General Secretary of NASU, Prince Peters Adeyemi, issued a circular to all branch chairmen on the suspension of the strike, starting from Monday, May 11.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has threatened to seal off any house in Abuja that is used as the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the faction led by Taminu Turaki.
Wike also warned that any bank that allows the Turaki-led PDP to open an account for the sale of nomination forms for the 2027 election will be in trouble.
According to him, any attempt by the Turaki faction to sell form to any aspirant for the 2027 polls will amount to duping Nigerians.
Wike boasted that any day Turaki opens a bank account for the PDP under the current circumstances, he will be derobed as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)
Naija News reports that the Minister made the declarations on Wednesday while fielding questions from newsmen during his monthly media chat.
There was a confrontation between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and the Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, during the plenary on Wednesday over what is described as unruly behaviour from the former Governor of Edo State.
Naija News reports that during the confrontation between the two lawmakers, Akpabio threatened to remove Oshiomhole from the Senate if he failed to comply with the upper chamber’s rules.
Prior to the caution from Akpabio, Oshiomhole had repeatedly disrupted plenary, as he persistently shouted “Point of Order” while Akpabio was reading the Votes and Proceedings of the previous sitting.
On Wednesday, trouble began at the commencement of plenary when Oshiomhole repeatedly interjected, drawing the attention of the presiding officer to amended Senate rules.
In response, Akpabio called on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu to guide his colleague on the Senate’s Standing Rules.
Akpabio then cautioned the former Edo State governor, stating, “If you are a soldier, you behave like a soldier. If you are a police officer, you behave like a police officer. So if you are a senator, you must go by the rules.”
He subsequently ruled Oshiomhole out of order, declaring, “Senator Oshiomhole, you are ruled out of order.”
However, Oshiomhole continued to speak from his seat, insisting on being recognised.
Akpabio reinforced the warning, telling Oshiomhole: “If you become unruly, I will take you out of the Senate.”
Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu during his inauguration at Eagle Square, Abuja, on May 29, 2023, was a bold decision he took and not part of his official inauguration speech.
Naija News reports that the removal of fuel subsidy triggered significant changes in petrol prices and the broader cost of living.
However, Shettima has stated that Nigeria is now on the right path, insisting that the economic reforms introduced by President Tinubu are beginning to produce positive results.
Shettima stated this at the Nasarawa Economic Summit 2026, where he spoke as the special guest of honour.
According to him, the Tinubu administration took difficult but necessary decisions to stabilise the economy, restore investor confidence and correct long-standing distortions that had weakened the country’s financial position.
The Vice President said some of the decisions taken by the Presidency were unavoidable, especially given the poor state of the country’s reserves when the administration came into office.
Shettima listed the removal of fuel subsidy as one of the major reforms carried out by the administration, noting that the decision was necessary because the country could no longer sustain the subsidy regime.

Some users criticised the content creator, while others urged the public to show restraint and empathy.

Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has apologised to team-mate Alvaro Carreras after a dressing room confrontation that reportedly followed the club’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis.
According to Daily Mail, the pair had to be separated at the training ground after Rudiger “lost his mind” in the aftermath of the stalemate two weeks ago.
Carreras has now confirmed there was an incident but moved quickly to downplay its significance, insisting the matter has been settled within the squad.
The left-back returned to the Santiago Bernabeu last summer in a deal worth about €50 million from Benfica and has recently been linked with reports of dressing room tension.
Reports in Spain claimed that Rudiger has since taken steps to repair relations, including organising a team dinner with players and their families last Friday.
The episode adds to a difficult campaign at the Bernabeu. Former boss Xabi Alonso left in January amid reports of unrest, while successor Alvaro Arbeloa is expected to depart at the end of the season.
The president of the Iranian Football Federation, Mehdi Taj, has said football’s global governing body (FIFA) is the authority behind the 2026 World Cup, pushing back against rising political tension over Iran’s participation.
Speaking to BBC Sport on Wednesday, Taj addressed concerns over travel restrictions and diplomatic friction ahead of the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
“Our host is FIFA, not Mr Trump or America,” Taj said, stressing that Iran qualified for the competition and expects to play under FIFA’s authority rather than political pressure from Donald Trump or Washington.
The comments follow reports that Iranian football officials were blocked from attending a FIFA Congress in Canada over alleged links to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which several countries classify as a terrorist organisation.
