Akpabio, Barau, Abbas May Retain National Assembly Position

There were indications on Saturday that Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, may retain their positions if re-elected into the 11th National Assembly.

It was gathered that President Bola Tinubu had given the presiding officers assurance of continuity.

Sources who spoke with The Nation said the assurance prompted Abbas to drop his senatorial ambition in Kaduna North in favour of former Kaduna State governor, Ramalan Yero.

A Presidency source said the President had no plan to alter his core team in the National Assembly.

The source said, “The President has no plan to change his core team. These principal officers of the National Assembly may retain their offices.

“The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives is not included because he intends to contest for governorship.

“So, whoever is aspiring for National Assembly office should embark on wider consultations before taking a political plunge.”
