Harry Maguire has admitted he was left “shocked and gutted” after learning he would not be part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for this summer’s World Cup.
The 33-year-old Manchester United defender confirmed the news on Thursday, a day before Tuchel unveils his final 26-man squad for the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Harry Maguire, who has earned 66 caps for England, had been recalled by Tuchel in March and believed he had done enough to secure a place on the plane after an impressive campaign at Old Trafford.
In a statement posted on his Instagram page, Maguire said: “I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had. I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision.
“I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.
“I wish the players, all the best this summer.”
Maguire played a key role for Manchester United during the second half of the season, helping the club secure a third-place Premier League finish under manager Michael Carrick.
His omission is one of several high-profile calls expected from Tuchel. Phil Foden and Cole Palmer are also set to miss out after inconsistent seasons for Manchester City and Chelsea respectively.
Meanwhile, Ollie Watkins is expected to be included following his strong finish to the season with Aston Villa, while Ivan Toney is poised for a return after scoring 32 goals in 32 league matches for Saudi club Al-Ahli.
Morgan Gibbs-White is reportedly among those set to miss out despite enjoying his best Premier League scoring season with Nottingham Forest.
Elsewhere, Luke Shaw is also expected to be omitted despite calls for his inclusion, while John Stones looks likely to keep his place despite an injury-hit season.
Tuchel’s final squad announcement comes ahead of the World Cup, which begins on 11 June across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
