The Katsina State Police Command has said it foiled attempt to rustle several number of cattle and sheep by suspected bandits in Bakori Local Government Area.
Spokesperson for the command, DSP Abubakar Aliyu, in a statement, said the incident occured on Tuesday, at about 11pm, at the Gidan Dan Maybe village.
Aliyu said on learning about the rustling operation, a joint security operation moved swiftly and traced the bandits’ location, and a gunfire exchange ensued.
He said all the animals were recovered while the bandits fled from the scene, some of them suspected to have been inflicted with gunshot wounds.
“On 2nd June, 2026, at about 11:00 pm, information was received at the Bakori Division that suspected armed bandits wielding dangerous weapons invaded Gidan Dan Maye village along the Gangaren Makurdi to Jargaba axis, rustling 12 cows and a yet-to-be-ascertained number of sheep.
“Upon receipt of the information, DPO Bakori quickly mobilized police operatives and responded to the scene in collaboration with members of the Vigilante Group. The team tactically traced the assailants to a point around Gidan Baushe village, where a fierce gun duel ensued.
“Due to superior firepower and tactics, the bandits abandoned all the rustled animals and fled the scene with suspected gunshot injuries.
“All the rustled animals were successfully recovered and handed over to their rightful owners. Meanwhile, efforts are being sustained to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects, as well as dismantle their network.
“The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State Command, CP Ali Umar Fage, while commending the bravery displayed by the team, reiterates the Command’s resolve to protect lives and property throughout the state.
“He further urges members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to provide timely and credible information to the Command for prompt and decisive action against criminal elements.”
