Emma Ruth Rundle announces new album These Killing Times

Emma Ruth Rundle has announced her new album, These Killing Times, out Sept. 18 via her own imprint, Errant Child.

Her sixth LP is a direct response to the current climate crisis and the cultural and systemic problems that cause global tragedies — a time when Rundle chose to look outward to her community rather than isolate herself. “I wanted to feel fortified by friendships and to be in community with other musicians,” Rundle says. “To make something that pushed back against the isolation.” In that vein, she enlists many of her friends, including Chelsea Wolfe drummer Jess Gowrie, saxophonist Patrick Shiroishi, Baroness guitarist Gina Gleason, Lukas Frank of Storefront Church, and others.

Previewing These Killing Times is lead single “Powerless,” a track that explores Rundle’s frustration with public figures and institutions that become implicated in power structures. “This song was initially titled ‘Noam Chomsky is Dead to Me’ as his relationship to Epstein and the billionaire class was being exposed,” Rundle says. “Just another massively disappointing headline in a time where we are incessantly confronted with an onslaught of news and headlines which are endlessly demoralizing and dehumanizing.

“With ‘Powerless,’ I invoke the hammer; both to destroy and to build something better,” she continues. “I want people to know they are not alone — they are not insane. I wanted to name the thing that has been causing me so much mental, emotional and spiritual anguish. Sometimes singing, especially repeating phrases, can work to fortify oneself, and I think that’s where the bridge of ‘Powerless’ comes in. I refuse to let my agency and resolve become corrupted or diluted by the powers that be, and I want others to feel empowered too.”
