Slow Pulp lead off third album with “Better Man” video

Slow Pulp have announced their third album, Melodie, out Sept. 18 via ANTI-.

With Melodie, Slow Pulp reflected on the relationships and experiences that shaped their lives over the past several years. On the LP, guitarist Henry Stoehr took on a larger songwriting role than in the past, reconnecting with the collaborative writing dynamic he and vocalist Emily Massey shared when they first met.

The band also released lead single “Better Man,” written by Stoehr. The release, which includes a video directed by Ben Turok, is about his realization that he had been living according to others’ expectations rather than his own.

“I realized that I had let go of the controls of my own life and instead was fully prioritizing what I thought people around me wanted from me,” Stoehr says. “I reckon that I did this, at least in part, because I felt really chaotic and out of control of my emotions and actions as a kid and in my early 20s, in a way that I’ve always been very self-conscious about.

“In my mid-20s, I entered a phase in my life that felt really stable. I had felt so turbulent emotionally up until that point, and I desperately wanted to feel that I deserved to experience that. Naively, I thought that I could just extinguish that kid that fucked up all the time and couldn’t control himself. This song is me both letting go of control but taking control of myself in a new way, and accepting myself for who I am, and hoping that I can be accepted by everyone else.”

Slow Pulp will head out on a major North American headlining tour this fall, including their largest hometown performance yet at the Salt Shed.
