CAF President Backs Infantino For FIFA Re-Election Despite

Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has defended FIFA President Gianni Infantino against ongoing criticisms.

Motsepe affirmed that all 54 African member associations support Infantino’s bid for a fourth term in 2027, dismissing allegations that Infantino exerts undue control over African football politics.

Addressing mounting European discontent and criticisms directed at Infantino regarding the running of the 2026 World Cup, Motsepe characterized Infantino as a loyal friend and an effective partner to Africa.

“I like his deep love for football, deep commitment for football in the world and support for Africa,” Motsepe told journalists in Johannesburg.

“Gianni has played a pivotal role in expanding opportunities for African national teams on the global stage,” he said, referring to the increase in Africa’s allocation by four direct places and an additional playoff berth. The continent was represented by a record 10 teams at this year’s tournament co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada.

While CAF remains steadfast in its support, Infantino faces mounting backlash from various quarters.

Critics, including Spanish football league President Javier Tebas, have claimed that Infantino’s time at the helm is flawed, citing the disruption of the traditional football calendar and issues regarding the 2026 World Cup format.

Some critics also expressed concern over recent US-based political interference, including instances where African officials faced restrictive immigration policies during the tournament.
