Several months ago, I wrote a newspaper column which undressed the personality cult around a certain East African strongman. The acolytes and admirers of the fellow in question immediately went into character assassination overdrive with death threats, harassment, phone calls to everyone around me – you name it. My crime? According to the gospel of Pan Africanism, I had crossed the African picket line to criticise a respected African leader. For this heinous crime, I was to be canceled!
