BUILDING merchants will be allowed to remain open in England as the country heads into a month-long lockdown from November 5.
In his speech to the nation on October 31, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said workplaces in the construction and manufacturing sector should remain open.

Will building merchants be open during November lockdown?
In his speech, Boris Johnson said on October 31: “Workplaces should stay open where people can’t work from home – for example in the construction or manufacturing sectors.”
“This is essential to keep the country operating and support vital sectors and employers.”
Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, confirmed that hardware stores and those selling building supplies will be able to operate.
Social distancing measures will remain in force – including the two metre social distance rule – and face masks will remain compulsory in shops.
Wearing a face covering has been mandatory in shops since July.
Can tradesmen keep working?
Tradesmen can keep working when the country is plunged into new lockdown restrictions from Thursday.
Advice during the first lockdown allowed the fitting of new kitchens, redecorating and other improvement works which may involve tradespeople such as builders, plumbers, electricians and roofers to name a few.
Tradesmen should not work if they are showing coronavirus symptoms – no matter how mild they may be. If they are showing symptoms, work should not go ahead.

Can I have workmen in my house?
Yes, you can have workmen in your home but they must operate with strict social distancing measures.
Tradespeople should contact the household in advance to check that no member of the household is showing coronavirus symptoms. If they are, work should be postponed.
You should encourage tradespeople to wash their hands when they enter your property. They need to use separate towels or paper towels, which need to be washed or disposed of safely after use.
Households should ensure that tradespeople have access to hand washing facilities.
Tradespeople should maintain a two metre distance from members of the household they are working in.
