Alan Shearer delivers a brutal verdict on critics fuming over England boss Thomas Tuchel snubbing the national anthem

ALAN SHEARER has told any Little Englanders that they can get lost if they are upset that Thomas Tuchel does not sing God Save The King.

German Tuchel – the third overseas boss of the England men’s team – does not join the players in singing the national anthem before internationals.

It could become an issue again when England appear at the World Cup and millions of fans turn on their TV sets to watch the matches and see Tuchel, 52, is tight-lipped.

Yet Shearer, as proud an Englishman as you will ever find, thinks it is not a debate worth having.

The former England striker said: “I mean seriously, who the hell gets offended that a manager from a different nationality doesn’t sing at the World Cup?

“The one thing that he has to do is go out and win matches, not sing a national anthem.

“To me that doesn’t make any sense.

“I don’t mind at all. Give me a choice – him winning the World Cup and not singing the national anthem. I know what I would choose.”

Shearer – scorer of 30 goals in 63 England matches – believes Tuchel, a Champions League-winning manager at Chelsea, has the gravitas and clout to make big selection calls.

Already there is going to be an issue about the No.10 role for the opening group match against Croatia on Wednesday, June 17.

Speaking in his role as a Betfair ambassador, Shearer said: “There’s so many different things that he has to get (his head) around.

“It’s going to be different time zones, different conditions, so many things that are going to be different.

“I’m pleased that he’s our manager going into the tournament and we’ve got a really, really good squad.

“Well, he’s single-minded and clearly he’s going to leave one or two out that are not going to be happy.

“He’ll have to make one or two big decisions in terms of team selection, which is fine. That won’t affect him.

“Because of that and because of his know-how and experience in winning things, I’m very happy he’s the one leading us into a tournament, with a real chance of going deep.”
