The National Sports Commission ,NSC, has announced an enhanced reward package for Team Nigeria athletes competing at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, as part of efforts to boost morale and reward outstanding performances.
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko disclosed that the revised incentive package was approved to further motivate the country’s athletes throughout the Games.
Under the new structure, every gold medal winner will receive a total of $10,000 — comprising an instant cash reward of $5,000 and another $5,000 paid directly into the athlete’s bank account.
Silver medalists will earn $5,000, with $2,000 paid immediately in cash,and the remaining $3,000 transferred to their accounts.
Bronze medal winners will receive $3,000, made up of a $1,000 instant cash reward, and $2,000 paid into their accounts.
Dikko clarified that, contrary to earlier reports, the three Nigerian athletes who won gold medals on Friday have each received the full $10,000 reward, not $8,000 as previously reported.

He added that Saturday’s two gold medalists have also received their full $10,000 rewards, while all silver medalists have been paid their instant $2,000 cash bonuses.
The NSC chairman also unveiled an incentive package for coaches, revealing that any coach whose athlete wins a gold medal will receive a $5,000 bonus.
In addition, athletes are entitled to a daily allowance of $200, while coaches receive $250 per day throughout the Games.
Dikko further noted that the commission has introduced discretionary performance bonuses for exceptional circumstances.
He cited the special on-the-spot cash reward presented to Rilwan Idris, which he said inspired the Nigerian para-powerlifter to upgrade a potential bronze-medal finish into a gold-medal performance.
According to the NSC, the improved welfare and incentive package reflects the commission’s commitment to providing Team Nigeria with the motivation, and support needed to achieve greater success at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
