Tier 4 visa will be replaced by Student Route in the new UK’s Points-Based Immigration System. It will be introduced in October 2020, and will apply to EU students from 1 January 2021.
New Points-Based System for Immigration
The UK Home Office has confirmed more detail on the new UK’s Points-Based Immigration System which will be put in place from October 2020, before the ending free movement for EU citizens on 31 December at 11:00 GMT.
The UK Points-Based System will comprise of immigration routes for students, as well as highly skilled workers, skilled workers and a variety of other professional work routes including routes for global leaders in their area and innovators.
EEA, EU and Swiss nationals
EU (alongside EEA and Swiss) citizens who come to the UK before the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020, and related family members, will be entitled for the EU Settlement Scheme. They have until 30 June 2021 to submit an application under that scheme. More than 3.7 million applications have been made until now.
We strongly recommend EU students to apply for the Settlement Scheme as soon as possible. We also advise that arriving EU students in the UK before 31 December 2020 to make sure their eligibility for the Scheme. They will later have until 30 June 2021 to apply.
From January 2021, EU citizens (who do not meet the requirements under EU Settlement Scheme or other routes safeguarded by the Withdrawal Agreement) will be required to apply and qualify for entry or stay on the same foundation as non-EU citizens.
EU citizens will consequently need to attain a visa for all actions other than short-term visits and all EU citizens arriving in to the UK for over six months will be able to demonstrate other rights and privileges via online services.
Most EU nationals will not be require to appear at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to submit their biometrics and will as an alternative give facial images using a smartphone self-enrolment application form.
EU students will be required to apply for the new Student route if they come to the UK after 31 December 2020. They will not be dependent on Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance.
Student route
The UK Student route visa will take the place of the current Tier 4 visa.
The new Points-Based Student route will shape on the present Tier 4 system.
It is expected that the Student Route will be more efficient for the sponsor and for the student. Students will need a total of 70 (non-tradeable) points to be provided leave. Points will be granted for meeting the obligations of the Student route, which include the English language requirements, sponsorship requirements and maintenance requirements.
Students will be able to apply for authorization to arrive in to the UK six months before the start of their course.
The study time limit for students studying at a postgraduate level will also be eliminated, although students will still be required to be moving ahead academically in their studies when making a further application in the UK.
When submitting further UK visa applications to remain in the UK, students will not be generally obligated to provide documentary evidence of funds.
The UK Home Office will issue more information about the new Points-Based System very soon. We will upload more videos on our channel as soon as this is published, so don’t forget to subscribe to our channel.
