This video discusses the government’s response to the amnesty petition. The petition has currently got over 20,000 signatures. I was hoping that the government would provide proper response – instead they have just responded by quoting the immigration rules and not engaging with the petition,
What is particularly disturbing is that the very reasons given in the limited response for not having an amnesty are the very reason Boris Johnson when he was mayor of London said we needed one, ie to prevent people being here illegally.
What is the way forward?
At present we are in the middle of the coronavirus crisis and the government’s muddled response to it, ie first we should go for herd immunity but then when told that would lead a huge death toll and the NHS not being able to cope locking down the country so late that we are likely to have, sadly, the second highest death toll after the USA.
However, one of the other ideas that I have suggested and talked about is doing what the Portuguese have done which is to treat migrants as if they were resident and to allow them to access benefits etc during the crisis.
The Home Office have not made any concessions at all to those people who are in the UK and are undocumented, this includes a large number of people who cannot be removed from the United Kingdom, either due to covid-19 or that the country to which they want to remove them is either in civil war or is so unsafe for them to be returned or where their home country simply will not or does not want to document them. This places a huge number of people in the United Kingdom who are effectively in limbo.
The Home Office has previously recognised that the immigration system is failing or “not fit for purpose” and created the legacy scheme to deal with a backlog of around 500,000 cases, the majority of which where there was a proper case lead to a grant of leave to remain.
Now with Priti Patel’s much trumpeted PBS being thrown out – or rather shelved at present, we have no new system in place come January 2021 and nothing has been proposed.
It seems like now is as good a time as any to implement a legacy 2 scheme and regularise those who have been in the UK for a considerable period of time and have no criminal history, even under the old legacy scheme cases were only referred to the CCD if they met a serious level.
