The purpose of this channel is to keep everyone up to date with immigration news as it happens, today’s broadcast is released on the same day as the Secretary of State’s ministerial statement on the new PBS.
Today the Home Secretary Priti Pate announced that the new Points Based System will come into effect on 1 January 2021,
which co-inicides with the right of free movement across the EU.
As I have mentioned under in my previous videos – individuals will need to earn 70 points – however as I have discussed – it is not a true points based system as a large element of it will be based on salary
The minimum figure is set at between £25,000, though if you have a PhD of all into shortage occupation then maybe able to earn extra points.
The government has said that it will make it easier for businesses to attract talent and the says the new heath and care visa will have a reduced fee and that front line health workers will not have to pay the IHS.
There is also an affirmation of the new PSW work visa for two years for those who graduate after the summer of 2021.
While all of this sounds great and the Prime Minister has says that the new system will be humane and that the UK will not be slamming the gates – there is the usual confusion at the Home Office –
Priti Patel said that:
“We will be introducing a new-fast track health and care visa. This will make it easier and quicker for talented global health professionals to work in our brilliant NHS and in eligible occupations in the social care sector. “
This sounds like a step forward for the lowest paid who work in the vital field of care – especially during the Pandemic – however it seems to be a case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing given
This is because Number 10 has since said that social care workers will not be included.
The Home Office confirmed that there will not be a route for the low paid into the UK and the SoS has said when their visas run out they will have to apply under the new rules, ie if you do not earn enough, go home, even if you have been working on the front line as a key worker during the Pandemic.
This has caused a group called the Cavendish Coalition which represents UK health and social care groups to warn that there will not be enough low paid heath care workers to live lawfully in the UK – and that one in six of the workers in this field earns between £16 – 18,000 a year so will not quality
While the PM can talk of a humane system it ignores those who have fought Covid-19 on the front line and have fallen ill but continue to risk their and their families lives and moreover completely ignores the need for the government to get to grips with the million or so people living in the UK without papers.
There is no mention of an amnesty and it seems that the PM who once said it would be a good idea has turned his back on these people, people who only have contributed to the UK, but also are most at risk, due to lack of proper adequate health care coupled with the hostile environment during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As I have said before, the government previously introduced a simple PBS, it became a byword for fraud and litigation, and rather than looking at overhauling the system and having some form of amnesty the government wants to put a sticking plaster over the problem.
In my view, the new PBS does not differ in any reality from the past, and if the past PBS was such a success why change it?
Its a sorry state of affairs where the UK government has the chance now it has “taken back control” to clear the decks and implement a fair and open system rather than tinker with the old failed model.
As I have said before and continue to say until the government addresses or even knows who is in the UK, it cannot seriously make plans for the future.
