UK immigration 'a problem not a crisis'

Kent County Council’s Liberal Democrat opposition leader has denied that the UK faces a crisis in the number of migrants arriving in small boats.

Speaking with talkRADIO’s Ian Collins, Rob Bird said: “Let’s look at this reasonably and sensibly. It’s a problem; it’s a problem which we can manage – it is not a crisis, the numbers in percentage terms are minimal.”

It comes as the local authority said it had reached its capacity for caring for asylum seeker children.

Meanwhile, former international security strategy minister Sir Gerald Howarth argued that the number of arrivals was a “complete farce”.
