Britain needs to do what former prime minister Tony Abbott did with Australia’s asylum seeker crisis and make it very clear “if you try to attempt to cross the English Channel … you will be sent back,” says activist Tim Montgomerie.
In just a single day, more than 400 migrants have attempted to cross the English Channel by small boats to enter the UK, with British Border Force intercepting the vessels.
Mr Montgomerie said there are many reasons to explain why people are attempting to cross over in such large numbers.
“It’s partly the English language; a lot of these migrants are much more comfortable speaking English than a European language,” he said.
“We need to do what Australia did a few years ago when Tony Abbott was prime minister.
“We need to make it very clear that if you try to attempt to cross the English Channel – and certainly if you get here – you will be sent back.
“This is the only way that we will ultimately discourage people from crossing the Channel to get to the UK.”
