Where is the migrant camp in Calais?
What countries do migrant workers illegally entering the UK come from?
What happens to migrants when they get through the Channel Tunnel?
How do migrants get to Calais?
Why are migrants trying to get to the UK from France?
What is Operation Stack?
These are just a few of the many questions that people believe remain unanswered, regarding the Calais migrant crisis. Currently, in Calais, there are literally thousands of illegal migrants, mostly from West Africa trying to get into the UK via the Channel Tunnel, by either jumping onto lorries, walking the tunnel, or simply trying to break into the complex and hiding on the trains.
These people, framed by many as benefit seeking scroungers, often have little work in West Africa, and come to the UK looking for hope, for a fresh start, and most importantly work. The Euro tunnel complex in Calais has been fortified with more French police, a stronger fence, and CCTV cameras, yet many people continue to blame French police for the ever increasing number of migrants attempting to enter the UK via the Channel Tunnel/Euro tunnel.
In an effort to curb the effect of an ensuing number of lorries attempting to cross the Euro tunnel to get to Calais, Kent police have hastily closed the M20, and turned it into a massive lorry park, where the Lorries will wait for the situation to die down, before they cross the tunnel and get on with work. This has had a major effect on business, with the delays going on for days, and many firms, from all over Europe, negatively effected. The sheer number of migrants is truly shocking, 39,000 have attempted to cross the Channel since January, and many keep wondering, when will it end?
Here is the transcript if you’re interested:
Currently both the French and UK governments are dealing with an ever mounting problematic crisis, where thousands of immigrants have tried to enter the UK via the Channel Tunnel.
These immigrants have been initially camping in Calais, and then trying to cross the channel via a number of methods.
Some have been trying to stow away on Lorries queuing for the tunnel, or others that are simply parked up.
Also, as a result of some French ferry workers striking because of low pay, which closed the tunnel, some migrants have attempted to stow away on Lorries on the way to the port.
Quite a few have been cutting through the fences surrounding the tunnel complex and trying to board the Eurotunnel, or Lorries that are parked up.
A small amount of migrants have even tried to walk the distance, along the tunnel, in doing so a few have been killed.
The camps are located close to the port and a few miles from the Eurotunnel complex, where about 3,000 migrants are estimated to be living in makeshift tents.
The crisis is hardly new however, with the Eurotunnel have being closed multiple times throughout it’s short lifetime.
Yet the amount of migrants attempting to get to the UK via Calais has rocketed up this year, French and UK authorities estimate that they’ve prevented 39,000 attempts since January just this year.
The UK and French authorities are investing heavily in increasing security for the tunnel, by extending the fence and providing extra guards, as well as CCTV cameras.
A heavy amount of criticism has been levied at the French police, with many stating that their attempts to keep migrants away are pathetic, apparently after they find migrants hidden in Lorries, they simply drive them a couple of miles from Calais before allowing them to easily walk back into the town and attempt the journey again.
The UK is seen by many migrants as a brilliant place to live in, many speak the language and with jobs seemingly easier to find, and the benefits system, as well as housing and education, superior to other surrounding nations.
However studies do not back this up.
Due to the disputes going on in Calais, Kent police have issued the emergency procedure known as operation stack. This involves closing the M20 and turning it into essentially a huge lorry park, where Lorries pretty much sit and wait until the situation blows over, and they can cross the Channel. This can go on for days.
