GOOD MORNING FIGHT FANS
Daniel Cormier has called for Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier to fight for the vacant lightweight belt – in a snub to Conor McGregor.
The title appears up for grabs after Cormier’s close friend and ex-training partner Khabib Nurmagomedov retired following victory over Justin Gaethje.
Cormier told ESPN: “The reality is, I don’t know how often Conor is going to fight.
“If this is the Conor McGregor from back then who fought anytime, anywhere, sure, put him in a title fight right now.
“Because he’ll be around, he’ll be fighting, he’ll be defending it.”
Meanwhile, Khabib’s coach Javier Mendez had no idea the UFC legend was going to retire after he beat Justin Gaethje.
The admission came as the 29-0 Russian star landed back in Dagestan.
But this came as a shock to trainer Mendez, who helped prepare the unbeaten champion for his final fight.
He told Submission Radio: “I learned about it while he was giving the speech
“My jaw dropped. I went, ‘What?’ I mean, he plays the best poker face on the planet.”
And finally, Edson Barboza has revealed that he will explore free agency after his next fight.
He told Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting: “I have one more fight on my contract and I plan on doing this fight, and we’ll think about what we’ll do next after the contract is completed.
“I’m in the UFC for 10 years, I love fighting in the UFC, and everything I have today I’ve undoubtedly conquered with the UFC so I love being there, but I’m open to offers — after this fight, of course.”
