Wai Ching Ho, who was known for starring in Marvel shows such as Daredevil and Iron Fist, has passed away aged 82.
The Hong Kong-born actress played the role of Madame Gao across the shows, as well as The Defenders, also appeared in series such as Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens, Only Murders In The Building and Pixar film Turning Red.
According to Variety, Ho died from a reported stroke on July 10, with a representative for the star confirming the news.
“Her family are deeply grateful for the incredible outpouring of love and support and the many beautiful messages and memories people have shared about our beloved Wai,” they said in a statement. “Reading how much she meant to so many is comforting to us during this difficult time.”
The actress made her US film debut in 1990’s Cadillac Man starring Robin Williams, and appeared in a variety of film and TV roles over the years, including The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Set It Up, Hustlers, Law & Order and Flight Of The Conchords.
She also appeared on stage in Past Lives director Celine Song’s Endlings, and had a voice role in video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Paying tribute, Daredevil co-star Peter Shinkoda wrote on Instagram: “I won’t ever forget you. I learned every minute from you when we were together on and off set. I know wisdom – I’d hang on your every word. We will meet again, my friend. You were beautiful.”
“It’s a very emotional moment for all of us who knew Wai Ching Ho @waichinghohknyc,” actor Perry Yung added. “She passed away peacefully after a stroke two days ago.
“I had seen her perform many times on stage, had many a dim sum and she came to see @slantperformancegroup many times. I even had the enormous good fortune of having played her husband (parents to @justinchon) in the film High Resolution.
“Wai Ching was a kind, compassionate human being whose work as an artist lifted every production to a higher standard, and we are better for it. Rest in power dear friend.”
