Pickford howlers tarnish Everton win, Brighton set up Man Utd tie and Newcastle thrash Morecambe

KEEPER Jordan Pickford’s two howlers put question marks over his England future  despite Everton’s 5-2 romp at Fleetwood – on a night of Premier League domination in the Carabao Cup.

Brighton set up a fourth-round clash with Manchester United, while two-goal Joelinton led Newcastle’s 7-0 destruction of ten-man League Two hosts Morecambe.

But it was a double disaster for Pickford at League One Fleetwood.

Brazil striker Richarlison struck twice for Everton before Pickford PASSED the ball to home sub Mark Duffy for a simple reply.

Alex Iwobi made it 3-1 but Pickford then let in a Callum Camps’ bicycle kick that was straight at him.

Even further Toffees’ goals from  Bernard and Moise Kean could not detract from Pickford’s elementary errors.

Meanwhile, Iranian Alireza Jahanbakhsh and Argentinian Alexis Mac Allister sunk Preston 2-0 – each also having netted in Brighton’s 4-0 second-round defeat of Portsmouth last Thursday.

Midfielder Mac Allister had previously been goalless since arriving on the south coast in January 2019.

And Newcastle netted five times before the interval for the first time in 27 years.

Joelinton’s 25-yard top-corner special for his second and Newcastle’s fourth goal eclipsed even Jacob Murphy’s curler just before it at Morecambe.

Miguel Almiron also scored as the Toon led 4-0, before Toumani Diagouraga’s red card made more goals inevitable.

They came from Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles and a Sam Lavelle own goal as Newcastle earned a trip to Newport.

Kai Havertz’s treble spearheaded Chelsea’s 6-0 crushing of Barnsley and Arsenal won 2-0 at Leicester.  

And Fulham’s dominant 2-0 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday teed up a tasty trip to west London neighbours Brentford, who they beat in last month’s Championship play-off final.

Aboubakar Kamara and Bobby Decordova-Reid pounced from close range on nine and 32 minutes respectively.

Josh Brownhill fired a stupendous 30-yard opener before Matej Vydra doubled Burnley’s winning margin late on at Millwall.

The Clarets will host Manchester City or Bournemouth in the last 16.

And Stoke will go to Bristol City of Aston Villa after  Tyrese Campbell’s clinical only goal of the game against Gillingham in the 37th minute, courtesy of a sublime pass from midfield orchestrator Jordan Thompson.
